Dance with a Dandelion!

ist2_876042-mowing-the-grassThis summer season has produced an unusual amount of rain and as a result my lawn mowing routine has become increasingly demanding and frequent!   What was  once a fun summer chore has now grown into a dreaded horticultural enslavement!

Yesterday I headed out to the front lawn with a quick battle plan in mind to get this over with, when suddenly, I noticed a single dandelion smack in the middle of my yard!

how-to-care-for-your-lawn-in-fall0I have a strong killer instinct toward weeds of any kind  so my immediate thought was, I need to kill it!  But something inside me said, no wait!   So I walked over to take a closer look.

dandelion_sun-300x300As I moved in for a close up,  I was awe struck by a singular beam of light streaming through the clouds, highlighting this small almost celestial fuzzy globe of a weed!  Transfixed by its star like beauty , I began to remember my previous encounters …

mz.squared Hoping no one was looking,  I knelt down and gently pulled the snowy white flower out from the ground and held it up to my lips…then I gently exhaled …

dianegativaLike magic the tiny wispy buds caught stage on a tender breeze and ballerina danced around my face.  And for a brief  moment, I was reborn a child again .  It was an instantaneous rendezvous modifying my  perspective on yard work all together.   I returned once again to my domestic task peacefully contented.

MattNJohnsonIf I may suggest ….the next time you see a dandelion….well, you’ll know what to do!

The only difference between a weed and a plant is that weeds are not wanted. That’s because they are in the wrong place. Dandelions are in the wrong place almost wherever they grow but in your blog they seem in the right place.

  2. I almost forgot how much fun it was as a kid to sit and watch them drift away. Thanks for the reminder of carefree days.

  3. I don’t have a lawn in Spain, and it’s a nice break. I do miss being able to chip golf balls all the time and walking barefoot through the grass, but if you’ve ever lived in Florida (or anywhere else with sand spurs) even that can have a drawback or 10.

The only problem with your beautiful post is…..if you blow the seeds into your yard, this time next week you’re going to be overrun with dandelions. Lol. As long as you’re having fun though, right!!

  4. Yes Kiddo…I ‘m fairly confident that dandelions are in the same genus as rabbits!
You can come over to my lawn any day ! No sand spurs here!
    Hugs my son!

  6. Dandelion rabbits! Very good. Very good.

Even a small town where I live is pretty civilized. Else I might confess a fondness for things growing just exactly where “they think they should”. Perhaps the corollary to what we name as “weed”. Maybe in some alternate, might be my name as well! So, a little kindness, yes, for all who can find a place beneath our wild sun.

And yea, when we were kids, we didn’t call them weeds, we called them fun!

And not the fun to wind as these, but poppies too, like candy to the eye, so bright and demonstrate just precisely what orange is supposed to mean. So, even a lawn is an adventure huh?

  7. I don’t know that much about botany, but it all sounds true. Haha.

  8. Tomorrow is lawncare day. I think you’ll find me blowing the tufts into the cool breeze, too.

Then I’ll smash little buggers into the ground and run them over with the the lawn tractor :-)

I enjoy your pictorial mini-essays…always a good start to my day!

    • LOL! Sweats! I love your humor! Its hard to believe but I have to mow the lawn tomorrow AGAIN! Yikes!
Thank you for the compliment…You’re a very sweet and kind person!
Hugs my dear…and see you in the yard!

  9. I loved blowing dandelions as a child. I’d pick them and make bouquets of them before they went to seed and I’d pick every one after they went to seed to blow them away. It was the first flower I knew the name of.

    It drove my mother crazy.

She’d always tell me to stop blowing those weed seeds all over the place because it just made more of them grow.

That’s why I blew away every dandelion I could find.
